Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father had left, the Ford family was taken care of by her mom, grandmother and godparents. When she was a young girl she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to associations with words. Ford began performing in her teens, and was an actor in the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a month, she decided that it wasn't the right fit for her. Ford decided to apply instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered a position on her fourth try. Her classmate were Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993, but she already had her TV debut in a 1992 episode of Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such TV shows such like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Tate was a regular performer on stage and was a member of The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. However, Tate quickly began gaining attention for her stand-up comic and added stand-up comedy to her resume in the year 1996.
